Among McDowell County's several historic communities is the city of Welch, serving as the county's seat since 1892. The city holds huge significance to the county including several historical markers such as the National Coal Heritage Trail sites and the Merci Boxcar. When visiting our wonderful county, visit our seat and enjoy its history, food, lodging, and charm.

This website has been developed by The Council of the Southern Mountains, a nonprofit social service agency in southern West Virginia, to encourage tourists to visit the spectacular County of McDowell, West Virginia.

 

The Council issues information on county-wide events, local activities, hotels, restaurants, and points of interest to promote tourism. These tourism initiatives serve to promote economic development in McDowell County.
